Writing in 한글!

Writing in 한글! Yeah I suck at it. Luckily I have come across a few printouts that will hopefully help me write better. It's not easy at all so far! A lot of people on my Korean Facebook groups say they enjoy writing in Hanguel. I need to find this joy!! Still updating my progress on give it 100 and hope to start a youtube channel soon so I can post monthly progress updates!

In other news, I've found this other learning site I like. How To Study Korean. It's by this guy name Will. I think the lessons that I've read so far have good details and really helps me so far. I've only done a couple lessons though. Each lessons also comes with 30 - 50 new words to learn and they are linked to another awesome site, Memrise. Memrise is great for learning new vocab. The site uses mems to "help you form vivid, sensory memories" and I must agree that it works. It makes memorizing vocabulary fun!

I am also heavily using LingQ these days.  I signed up to do their 90 day challenge so hopefully I see great improvement in those 90 days but I must meet my daily targets to see improvement of course. So far I've been doing well. The site focuses on learning through reading whether then grammar! But don't worry I am getting my grammar in still through How to Study Korean & Talk to me in Korean!

Speaking of TTMIK, I also signed up for Harukorean but I haven't used the site much as I am waiting to receive my TTMIK Level 1 & 2 workbooks that I order a week or so ago. It takes up to 3 weeks to get them. Lame!

Anyway, I think that is about it for this update!

Shit Koreans Say!

So I came across this video on the blog Korean As It Is and Ohmygawd, it's hilarious to me and now I'm going to use it as a learning tool for myself. I'm challenging myself to learn every word / phrase in the video. I think it'll be fun. I've watched the video at least once for the past 3 times and it makes me laugh each time. Luckily on Korean As Is, he took the time out to transcribe the phrases and I have pasted them below. I like fun ways of learning and this will definitely be one!

야!
Hey! (getting attention)
너 미첬어?  / 너 미쳤니? (sounds feminine)
Are you crazy?
죽을래?
Wanna die?
아이~씨
Damn it! (expression of annoyance)
야 너 입 닥쳐! 응?
Shut your mouth!
야 너도 죽을래?
You wanna die too?
야 많이 먹어 (intonation rises) 빨리!
Eat a lot.. Hurry!
여보세요?
Hello? (when on the phone)
왜 말이 많아?  – sound like 많어
Why are you talking so much? (
안녕 (cute voice)
Hi
야~ 너 왜 그러니 지금?  – last syllable stretches out; a characteristic of scolding
Hey what’s wrong with you write now? (said either accusatory or out of concern)
왜 그래?
What’s wrong with you?  – often means, why are you doing/acting like that?
빨리 와 나 배고파!
Come quick, I’m hungry!
너무 맛있어~
So delicious
야 밥 먹을래?
Do you wanna eat?
엄마~ 밥!

I’ll do it a little later (perfect for giving an excuse)
지금 좀 바쁜데…
I’m a little busy now (infers this is the reason that the speaker can’t do something)
알았어
Alright (= I got it)
좀 있다가 나갈개
I’ll go out in a bit
야 휴지!
Hey! Toilet paper.. (= bring me it)
오빠
Hey [older brother]!
NoteOppa is the perfect way for a girl to get a guy’s attention; also not said by men, unless referring to oneself in a playful manner
오빠.. 나 이거 빠리 먹을 수 있다
Older brother.. I can eat this really quick (this is a silly kind of 자랑/showing off)
여보세요? 엄마 왜 전화 해? – the pronunciation on this one doesn’t sound native to me
Hello? Mum, why are you calling me?
아 누구하고 전화해?
Who are you talking with on the phone?
나 지금 진짜로 화났어!
I’m really angry now!
리모트 콘트롤 – note 리모트콘 is more commonly used in Korea

소리가 안 나와요
There’s no sound [lit. the sound is not coming out]
왜 말을 안 들어?
Why aren’t you listening [to me]?
와이팅!
An expression of encouragement, the closest English has is you can do it (it is NOT ‘cheer up’, as it is often mistranslated as). Interchangeable with カンバレ in Japanese.
물 좀 갔다줘 오빠
Bring me some water, older brother
빅방 누군지 알아? – pronunciation of Big Bang doesn’t sound Korean
Do you know who Big Bang are?
당연하지 알지!
Of course it is – you know that!
에어 콘디션너 좀 올려놔 – note that again, in Korea people are more likely to say 에어콘
Turn up the air con a bit
오빠 안 추워요?
Older brother, aren’t you cold?
먹어 볼래요?
Wanna try (eat) it?
다 먹어 벌였어
completely ate it all
배고파 뭐 사줘요!
I’m hungry.. Buy me something!
안돼! (note the intonation here)
You can’t (or, it can’t be done / it’s impossible)
그여자 예쁘다~ 응?
That girl is pretty, isn’t she?
Note: from my experience the only correct answer to this question is no, you are more beautiful –> 네가 더 예쁜데

At the end, Lydia sings the first few lines a little nursery rhyme about a rabbit going somewhere, but I’m not going to transcribe that as the rest took longer to transcribe than I thought it would.
…..
My goal is to be able to listen to the video and understand each word / phrase as well as to be able to transcribe it as he did above. I'll keep you guys updated on my progress :-).

Give it 100!

So I know it's been a minute but I feel off the wagon but I'm back on for good! To help keep me focused and committed I've joined giveit100.com. It's a really cool site. You make 10sec videos for 100 days (or more) about your progress on whatever you chose to do. Of course I chose to learn Korean for the next 100 days! Check me out and follow along on my progress :-) Giving it 100!

Heirs.

I decided to give Korean Drama's a go and saw a friend talk about this show so I decided to check it out. Before watching I felt it might be like a Korean version of Gossip Girl. Maybe not quite so far but I am really liking it. Watched 4 episodes already. This was my Korean studying for the night. Can't really learn many new words or phrases but it's nice when I recognize something!

Learning Hangul (한글) resources!

안녕하세요!

Learning 한글 is easy as you may or may not have heard. I think it took me a day or too however the hard part for me is not learning the consonants and vowels but my brain quickly remembering without having to stare for 10 seconds. So I've been trying to constantly refresh my brain of the symbols so that I can read 한글 faster. Here are a few of the resources I've used to learn and study 한글.

1. BusyAtom Youtube - Really good. I used his youtube videos in conjunction with an app on more phone and both made my learning experience quick and easy.
2. TenguGo Hangul - this is an app I downloaded on my phone (Android). It is very good in my opinion and even have little quizzes to test yourself.
3. Click Korean - just came across this one today and I really like it. Especially how for some of the sounds it actually shows a person's mouth so that you can see how the shape of you mouth should be when pronouncing the symbols.  Providing to be great as a refresher.
4. Talk to me in Korean - I haven't used this one but I have no doubt that it's good.
5. Korean Wiki Project - used this in the beginning as well. Very good and love how I could practice what I learned with all the different word examples.

Things I am currently studying.

  • Typing in Hanguel (한글 ) . I'm trying to type without having to look at my onscreen keyboard to remember where each specific one is. This is fun.
  • Just finished Level 1 at Talk to me in Korean. I thought I had comprehended things well however my listening skills suck and when I listen to the Level 1 complete Korean dialogue I barely understand 15% of it. So I'm constantly replaying it until I at least understand 80%
  • Also reviewing everything from Level 1.
